When she was lying back and taking photos, a nurse shark bit her hand on the left and she was pulled under water. The shark held her in its grip for around eight minutes. Mara was pressured by her parents to attend college, however she was already being employed as an actor, and so waited for about three or four years before deciding to not go. Mara moved to Manhattan to allow her to be able to work full-time as an actress.
